Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly has regularly been linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United and Liverpool both believed to be keen on a transfer this SUMMER.
Napoli reportedly want £80m for Kalidou Koulibaly with Manchester United believed to be leading the chase for the defender.
Koulibaly has regularly been linked with a move to the Premier League with Liverpool also believed to be keen on the centre-back.
United registered their interest last summer with a €100m bid believed to have come from the Red Devils before Harry Maguire was signed.
And Italian outlet La Repubblica now report that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in ‘pole position’ to sign the defender this summer.
It’s claimed that talks between the clubs did not end last summer, but were instead ‘postponed for twelve months’ with Napoli wanting €90m (£80m).
Napoli ace Kalidou Koulibaly has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League
Former Premier League ace Craig Burley believes United need Koulibaly more than runaway league leaders Liverpool.
“Look, is Koulibaly a great get for most clubs? Absolutely, fantastic centre-half,” Burley said. “But you’ve got to weigh up the pros and the cons.
“He’s going to be 29 this summer, in a month or so, there’s the financial situation in terms of getting the player in and their wages, and Man United’s need is more.
Liverpool and Manchester United have both been credited with interest in Koulibaly
Man Utd transfer target Kalidou Koulibaly ‘makes Napoli future decision’
“They’ve got a good centre-half in Maguire and then they’ve got a couple of other centre-halves that I’m sure they would like to get rid of, and if they could bring a player in they would.
“Liverpool have [Joel] Matip, they have [Joe] Lovren and they have Joe Gomez, who is an excellent young player.
“None of them to the standard of Koulibaly but they’ve already got arguably the world’s greatest defender in Virgil van Dijk.
“So their need for another centre-half is not desperation.
“So they’ve got other places in the team they would need to look.
“I would be surprised if Liverpool went out and shelled big money on another centre-half when they can spend big money on other places in the team, for the reason that I explained.”
